Emergency Procedures

Rational

Emergency or critical incidents which may occur in any school, and which affect pupils, teachers, parents or the school site and have a direct impact on operational ability.

This information is to make parents aware of these types of incidents and the school's response to them. The way that the school will communicate with parents is also included.

Types of Incidents

  • Natural disasters: flood, storm, fire
  • Medical: food poisoning, meningitis, pandemic flu
  • Major accident: chemical spillage, transport, explosion
  • Off site: outdoor education, road traffic accident
  • Human: terrorism, violence, serious injury, death

Responses to Incidents

  1. Evacuation from building/site (e.g. fire on site, bomb threat)
  2. Lock down (e.g. swarm of bees, intruder in grounds, other danger in grounds)
  3. Closure of school (e.g. adverse weather, medical issues, failure of gas or electricity supplies or key issues in school e.g. heating)
  4. Accident/injury, on site or off site
  5. Pastoral care, e.g. death/injury of a member of the school community or their family

Key Roles

The Headteacher and senior staff are responsible for ensuring that incidents are managed in a way that maintains the health, safety and wellbeing of all.

These are ways in which you will be informed of emergency closures and subsequent reopening of the school or other emergency situations:

In the unlikely event of children having to be evacuated from the building or site, parents would be given information at the time regarding collection arrangements.

In an emergency or exceptional circumstances, it may be necessary to close the school. Further information can be found in the 'Parent Information Critical Incidents' document below.
