Intent
At Springdale, we believe that a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in leading healthy, active lifestyles. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Our children will develop fundamental movement skills and learn how to apply these in different ways to enable them to imagine, believe and achieve.
The PE Curriculum at Springdale First School
At Springdale, children enjoy two PE lessons a week, one inside and one outside. Lessons cover a whole range of physical activities including indoor and outdoor games as well as gymnastics and dance. In 2017/18, we were proudly awarded the Bronze School Games Mark for our commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community. Following this, in 2018/19, we were thrilled to be chosen to host Joe Wicks as part of his 'UK Schools HIIT Tour' and to be awarded the Gold School Games Mark for all our efforts in sport. In 2019/20, we were delighted to be recognised for our ongoing commitment and achievement in the School Games Programme and hope to achieve this again in 2020/21.

03/02/25
Year 4 students from local primary schools recently had an exciting opportunity to visit Corfe Hills School and participate in a fun-filled session of castleball. This unique sport, similar to dodgeball, adds an extra layer of strategy as teams must defend their castle while trying to eliminate opponents. The primary aim of the visit was to encourage physical activity and provide an enjoyable experience for all the children involved.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the castleball session, running around the sports hall, dodging balls, and working together to protect their castle. The friendly competition and unique game format created an atmosphere of excitement and laughter. It was evident from the smiles and enthusiasm on their faces that the visit was a resounding success, leaving the Year 4 students with positive memories and a newfound interest in staying active.
Many thanks to the parents who were able to help with transport - without your help, these events would be impossible to attend.
Playground Sports Challenges
21/01/25
The Sports Ambassadors were keen to improve physical participation levels in the playground as part of their roles and responsibilities. Using the training they had as Bronze Leaders and Sports Ambassadors, the students set up different games and challenges in the playground for students to try. The aim was to see how many they could do in 1 minute and then to try and beat their score by the end of the week. This also linked in with our PHSE topic of setting goals and our PRIDE values.
As you can see below, the students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and learnt new skills at the same time.

The players quickly warmed up, passing the ball around and practicing their shots. As the tournament kicked off, each team displayed incredible teamwork, determination, and a positive attitude. They cheered each other on, celebrated every goal, and learned from every setback. The event was a great opportunity for the children to develop their physical skills, teamwork abilities, and a positive attitude towards sports. Springdale First School is incredibly proud of all the children who participated and would like to thank St Michael's High School for hosting such a wonderful event and the parents for helping with transport.
Year 3 Boys Football
09/07/24
The Year 3 boys' internal football match was a joy to watch! It was clear how much their skills had blossomed since Mr. Cameron first took them to a tournament back in Year 1. Not only were there fantastic displays of dribbling and goal-scoring from seasoned players, but it was also wonderful to see new faces giving football a go for the first time. This internal game was a great stepping stone, and we're excited for the prospect of some competitive matches against other schools next year!
Year 3 and 4 Girls Football
24/06/24
The excitement was palpable as the Springdale Year 3 and 4 Girls' football team travelled to Rushcombe First School for a much-anticipated match. The team, comprising Felicity Lawson, Matilda Coates-Smith, Kenna Hocking, Jasmine Perry, Lola Bickle, Kendall Williamson, Dixie Taylor, Annabella Palmer, and Bella Bird, were determined to put their best foot forward. Ava Haynes, their dependable goalkeeper, stood strong between the posts, ready to face any challenges.
The Springdale girls dominated the pitch from the start, showcasing excellent teamwork and sharp skills. Their precise passes and powerful shots proved too much for the Rushcombe team to handle. The final whistle blew with a resounding 5-0 victory for Springdale. Mr Cameron was incredibly proud of his girls and expressed his sincere gratitude to the parents for their support with getting the girls there and the cheering from the sidelines. Well done!

There were missed shots and triumphant cheers, all wrapped in a whirlwind of pure enjoyment. Mrs. Holman and Mrs. Kimber's encouraging voices filled the air, guiding the girls with patience and enthusiasm. By the end of the session, flushed cheeks and wide smiles told the story - it wasn't just about winning, but the camaraderie and pure fun of playing together. A big thank you to Mrs. Holman and Mrs. Kimber for making after-school netball such a delightful experience for the girls!
Capture the Flag
12/06/24
The playground buzzed with nervous energy as Year 3 and Year 4 faced off in a thrilling Capture the Flag challenge. All teams could be seen grouped together as they strategised in huddles, plotting how to become victors.
The whistle blew, and chaos erupted. The field, transformed into a battlefield, became a whirlwind of darting figures. Children, fuelled by enthusiasm, weaved through their opponents, while others opted to defend their flags at all costs.
A special thanks goes to the ever-enthusiastic sports ambassadors who patiently refereed, helped retrieve errant flags, and most importantly, kept the cheering spirit alive for both sides!
The aim of the afternoon was FUN which, by the looks of all the children's smiling faces, was well and truly achieved.
'Try Golf' with Mike from Sturminster Golf Club
10/06/24
Excitement buzzed through Springdale as Mike from Sturminster Golf Club arrived for their "Try Golf" day. Eager children, armed with putters and bright smiles, awaited their chance to experience the 'green'. Mike, a seasoned golfer from the nearby club, was ready to introduce them to the world of birdies and bogeys. Throughout the day, laughter filled the air as children swung their clubs, chipped balls onto the 'putting green', and learnt the basic techniques of the game. It was a day filled with discovery and a newfound appreciation for the sport.
Rounders Rumble at Corfe Hills
05/06/24
Springdale Rounders Team Scores Well-Deserved Second Place!
Ten excited youngsters from Corfe Hills School recently participated in a Rounders Rumble, showcasing their teamwork and skills on the field. While they may not have clinched first-place, their impressive performance secured a well-deserved second-place finish.
We would be remiss without acknowledging some of the game's standout players. Isaac Norton, Jasmine Perry, and Bethan Baxter consistently impressed throughout the competition, demonstrating exceptional Rounders talent. It's important to note the significant improvements made by John Crawford and Penny Courage. Their dedication and hard work during practice undoubtedly contributed to the team's overall success.
Beyond their athletic prowess, the Springdale Slammers (our team name) also garnered praise for their exemplary behaviour and positive attitude. Mr. Cameron expressed immense pride in his students' sportsmanship and conduct throughout the competition.
This experience at the rounders competition is sure to leave a lasting impression on these young athletes. The combination of impressive individual performances, along with a team-oriented spirit and a positive attitude, is a recipe for success both on and off the field. Congratulations to all of the team on their well-deserved second-place finish!
Castle Court Cross Country 2024
26/04/24
The Year 4 students had a fantastic day at the Castle Court School cross-country competition! Despite being up against a lot of other schools and not doing much training, they put in a tremendous effort and came in a very respectable 2nd place, just 20 points behind the winners. A special shout out goes to Felicity Lawson who showed incredible speed and determination to win the girls' race! Mr Cameron was bursting with pride for their performance and sportsmanship! Fabulous effort!
Year 2 Multi Sports
09/02/24
Some Year 2 students took time out of their busy learning to head over to Twin Sails for a fun-filled physical challenge of Multi Sports against two other Hamwic schools, Twin Sails and Hamworthy Infants.
The afternoon consisted of a rotation of different activities including egg and spoon races, standing long jump, basketball shooting, dodgeball, and domes and dishes.
While the main aim was full and promoting a love of physical activity, points were recorded and we were proud to say that Springdale was the overall 'winner' after winning the most competitions.
The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were a credit to themselves and the school for the way the participated showing great sportsmanship. Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport, without you we would not be able to attend these events.
Year 3 and 4 Tennis Skills Festival
22/05/23
It has been a busy but successful half term for Springdale sporting teams this half term with another group of Year 4 children making their way to East Dorset Tennis club for a Tennis Skills festival.
With the sun shining, the children made the most of the day enjoying a range of activities to help improve their hand-eye coordination, balance and agility, and tennis skills. During each event, children were able to score points with the winners being announced at the end of the day.
I am proud to say that Springdale placed 1st and 3rd for the day which is a magnificent effort.
Again, a massive thank you must be said to the parents who were able to help with transport and who stayed to watch. The children greatly appreciate the opportunity to attend these events and it is wonderful to see them thrive outside of the classroom.
Tri Golf Competition @ BMS
15/05/23
The sun was shining. The grass was green (and long). It was a beautifully gorgeous day for some Tri Golf!
Twenty Year 3 and 4 children made their way to Broadstone Middle School for a fun-filled morning of Tri-Golf events. There were a range of different competitive activities for the children to participate in, from putting skills to chipping skills to showing how far they could drive a golf ball.
It was amazing to see the children grow in both skill and confidence throughout the morning, with many of our children showing some natural flair for hitting a golf ball.
At the end of the event, points were tallied and the children waited patiently to find out who had won. And the winner was... SPRINGDALE 1 with a massive total of 777 points with Springdale 2 in 4th place with 612 points.
Again, I can not say thank you enough to all the parents who gave up their time to help transport the children to and from this event. The smiles on their faces really highlighted the reason why these events are so important.
Tri-Golf Workshop
18/04/23
On Monday 17th April, we welcomed the children back with an exciting opportunity to try golf with Mike Dodd from Sturminster Marshall Golf Club. The day started with a whole school assembly, including a mini competition between some Year 4 children and a teacher.
Each class was then given the opportunity to take part in mini workshops that included putting and some chipping. They all thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and gained an appreciation of some of the different skills needed when playing golf.
The aim of the day was to expose children to a new sport that they would not normally access in school. We hope that the children enjoyed the day and take up the opportunity to attend 'Taster Sessions' at Sturminster Marshall Golf Club.
Thank you to Mike for his enthusiasm and time - it was a wonderful day!
Kelly Simm - GB Gymnast Visit
28/03/23
Springdale gave a warm welcome to GB Gymnast, Kelly Simm, who came to help inspire our children. Kelly has been a member of the GB Team for the last 10 years. She won Gold at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Silver and Bronze at the 2015 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
During the morning, Kelly led each class in a fast-paced circuit of physical exercise, getting the children to jump, do push-ups, and mountain climbers. There was lots of 'huffing and puffing' as the children got fully immersed in the atmosphere of the morning and created a wonderful buzz around the hall.
Afterwards, the children came together for an assembly where Kelly shared her experiences as a professional athlete. This linked in well with our PRIDE values, especially of DETERMINATION and PERSEVERANCE. Children were then given the opportunity to ask questions.
We hope that by having a professional athlete such as Kelly into our school will motivate children to become more physically active and inspire them to dream big and to follow those dreams.
Thank you to all the children for taking part and parents for assisting with the fundraising. This helps both Kelly and the school.
Year 3-4 Football
27/03/23
On Friday 24th March, a group of 20 children from Year 3 and 4 participated in a football tournament at Broadstone Middle School. We were lucky to take two teams to represent Springdale.
Each team played a round robin of games against a variety of different schools. Both teams played very well. This was the first time the Year 3 and 4 children played together and we were very impressed with their teamwork and cooperation. There were many goals scored, by many different players, which is a credit to the teams. The children passed the ball well and were good at finding space. Plus, lots of strong shots and rebounds. A super well done to the goal keepers, who had mud and puddles to dive around in.
Unfortunately, there was a heavy down pour with one game remaining, so the final games didn’t get played. But the children didn’t let this bother them! They all left the pitch smiling, cheering and a little bit soaked.
Thank you to all the parents that came to support the teams. I know the children appreciated the encouraging words and smiles from the side lines.
Year 4 Cross Country
17/03/23
On a wet and windy Friday, 10 brave Year 4 students made the trip to Castle Court School for their Year 4 Cross Country event. We were very lucky that by the time we arrived, the rain had stopped. However, the mud was stick laying thick on the track.
After a fun and energetic warm up lead by the Year 8 Sports Leaders, the girls were the first to set off. With the grass on the slope being very slippery, a few girls fell over, including Amy. However, they picked themselves up and carried on, with Amy making up great ground and coming in the middle of the pack. Naomi, Ella, and Tilly also put in an incredible effort in trying conditions.
The boys then stepped up to the starting line, feeling buoyed from the girl's wonderful performance. Springdale started strongly with George, Denny, and Teddy flying the gates. After a nervous 5-minute wait, the first boys made their way up the home straight. Teddy put in a magnificent effort to win the boys race with Denny coming in third. The other boys did very well, coming in the middle of a fully packed race.
Scores were totalled, with the lowest score deciding the winning school. After a brilliant performance, Springdale was able to claim third place, 3 points more than the winning school.
All the children who ran took part in true sportsman fashion, cheering everyone on. They did Springdale proud and have now set the standards for next year - can we go one place better? We will have to wait and see :)
Thank you to the parents who were able to take the children to and from the event. Without your support, it would be difficult to attend these occassions.
Year 3/4 Fliers Netball
14/03/23
On Monday 13th March, a group of 8 children from Years 3 and 4 had the opportunity to participate in a 'Fliers' netball tournament at Broadstone Middle School. This was the first time in many years that we have had a netball team represent Springdale at an event and what a fun time we had!
The aim of the event was fun, enjoyment and participation and our children embodied this. There was lots of laughing and supporting one another.
We played a round-robin of games against a variety fo different schools. Unfortunately, we were unable to win any of our games but there were many highlights. Both Freja and Grace scored some wonderful goals while Oscar and Hugo were rock solid in defence. Naomi and Kitty were covering the court providing options for passes and linking well with Esmae and Sophie. At the end of each game, it was wonderful to see lots of smiles - even the weather couldn't dampen their spirits!
Now that we have established a 'team' we are looking at building upon this for the future where hopefully we can become more competitive (while keeping the enjoyment aspect). The children should be very proud of themselves - they were a credit to our school!
A big THANK YOU also to the parents and grandparents who came down to watch and cheer on the children. Your support is invaluable and we couldn't take part in these events without it.
Year 4 Sports Afternoon
30/01/23
On Friday 27th January, a group of Year 4 children attended Cornerstone Academy for a multi-sports afternoon. The idea of the afternoon was fun and participation. During the event, the children took part in 4 different games: Benchball, Dodgeball, Football and Capture the Flag.
There was a mixture of schools who attended and the children had the chance to compete with and against other children. It was great to see how welcoming and friendly all the children were, especially when playing on the same team as other children from different schools.
As always, the children were impeccably well-behaved and a credit to Springdale. The whole afternoon was full of laughter, smiles and a lot of running around.
Thank you to the parents who were able to take and pick up their children. Without your support, these afternoons would not be possible.
Year 2 Football Festival
19/01/23
On Thursday 19th January, eight Year 2 footballers were chosen to represent Springdale First School in a fun football festival at Springdale. This was a wonderful experience for the children to take part in what was not only their first football game, but also their first trip outside of school.
While the weather started off icy in the morning, the sun soon came out for when the games began. The children got the chance to play 5 different games against other schools. Throughout each game, the continued to show improvement and ended up drawing their second last game 1-1 (We scored a goal!).
I was so impressed with the children's attitude to playing because it can be very hard to remain positive when losing all of your games, sometimes by a hefty margin. All of them played with great enthusiasm and came off the field after the final game with smiles of their faces.
Thank you to all the parents who came and supported, you should be equally proud of them and hopefully in the future, we can attend another tournament with more positive results. Well done Springdale!
Year 4 Sports Ambassador Training
10/10/22
On Monday 10th October, eight of our Year 4 children attended Ferndown Leisure Centre to undergo their Sports Ambassador Training. Sports Ambassadors are children who have a passion for sport and helping others, and they play a vital role in organising fun games and activities for children to enjoy at breaktime.
The children learnt a number of different games to play as well as different skills needed to be a successful leader such as communication, organisation, responsibility, and most of all how to have fun!
During the day, the children's behaviour was impeccable, and they need to be commended on representing Springdale in such a wonderful way. We look forward to seeing these new Sports Ambassadors in the playground soon.
Multi-Sports Year 1 and Year 2
27/09/22
On Friday 23rd September, a group of Year 1 and Year 2 children went to St Edward's High School for a multi-
sports afternoon. Children participated in a wide range of balancing, running, throwing, and jumping activities against other schools. It was fantastic to see the children engaging and trying their best in each activity, and always with a smile on their faces. They must also be commended on how well-behaved they were, encouraging one another and listening to the adults and St Edward's children who were running the event. We are also pleased to announce that we were placed equal second overall which is a magnificent achievement - well done Springdale!
