At Springdale First School, we aim to provide high-quality maths education that develops confidence, curiosity and enjoyment in every child. Through depth, variety and rich mathematical experiences each day, we strive for all children to succeed. Central to this is a strong focus on securing foundational mathematical skills, recognising that fluency counting and having a secure knowledge of number facts is the basis of all future mathematical learning.

We aim to inspire aspiration. Secure mathematical foundations and strong mathematical skills underpin success in everyday life, support achievement across the curriculum and open doors to future opportunities, enabling children to pursue fulfilling lives and successful careers.

Planning

At Springdale, our Maths curriculum is carefully designed to ensure progression through small, well-sequenced steps, allowing children to develop deep understanding alongside procedural fluency. We follow NCETM guidance (NCETM Teaching for mastery) for the teaching of mathematics, and the DfE’s Ready to Progress (DfE - Teaching mathematics in primary schools) criteria support teachers in identifying and securing the key concepts children need before moving on to new learning. Regular assessment at the end of each term informs future planning and helps identify aspects of number that require further teaching, intervention or revisiting.

In EYFS, children develop their early mathematical understanding through the principles of effective counting and the NCETM Mastering Number (NCETM Mastering Number) programme, supporting the development of strong number sense from the very beginning of their mathematical journey.

Knowledge is continually revisited and reinforced to support long-term retention. Through an interwoven curriculum, previously taught concepts are regularly connected to new learning, enabling children to make links and deepen their understanding. In Years 1 to 4, 5-a-day activities provide frequent opportunities to recall, practise and apply previously taught content and strategies. By revisiting key concepts and skills over time, children develop greater confidence, fluency and security in their mathematical understanding.

Multiplication

Knowledge, quick recall, and application of multiplication and associated division facts are important for building confidence in Mathematics. This is developed through regular and conscientious practise.

At Springdale, we use TTRockstars and NumBots to add a little fun to learning our times tables. These are online platforms that provide students and teachers with a number of different ways to practise their times tables and number facts in order to build speed and fluency.

Multiplication Tables Check

In Year 4, children will be tested on all of their times tables (multiplication only) and will need to answer each question within 6 seconds before the test moves on to the next question. This test is called the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). A similar version of the test can be found in TTRockstars called the ‘Sound Check’.

We strongly recommend that children are constantly rehearsing their times tables to build speed, fluency and confidence with them. This is best done in any arena besides ‘Jamming’ as ‘Jamming’ does not have a time setting so does not challenge children to build speed.

When children are first introduced to a new times table, 'Jamming' is a safe place for children to build up knowledge of this times table without the added pressure of a timer. Once children are developing confidence, they should then start practising the times table in 'Garage' where the teacher will have set the correct multiplication fact for the children to learn.
